The Spirit World
by Pastor James Roby
There are several types of "Spirit Beings" talked about in the Bible. Here is a brief list and explanation of each one:
1) The Seraphim. The Seraphim have three pairs of wings. They are attendants of the "Lord of Hosts" and call attention to His holiness. They are mentioned in Isaiah 6:1-8 and in Revelation 4:6-9. They are described as having eyes before and behind. There are four Seraphim mentioned in the Bible. One has the face of a lion, one the face like a calf, one the face as a man, and one is like a flying eagle. These are the guardians of the Throne of God.
2) The Cherubim. The Cherubim each have four faces and four wings. They have the "hand of a man" under each of their wings on the four sides. A complete description of these beings is found in Ezekiel 1:4-25, 10:1,3,5-9. They also stand around the Throne of God, assist in worship, etc.
3) The Angels. Angels are "innumerable." Hebrews 12:22. They are mighty in power. Often utilized to execute the wrath of God. 2 Thessalonians 1:7. All angels in the Bible are spoken of as men. (i.e. male). Angels are "ministering spirits" to them who are the heirs of salvation. (Hebrews 1:13-14). They watch over, protect and supply needs for the saved.
4.) The Devils. (Demons). Devils are fallen angels... Angels that rebelled with Lucifer when he attempted to overthrow God. Matthew 25:41. Devils are wicked, unclean, vicious and have the power to oppress, suppress and posses humans. Matthew 12:22, 15:22, Luke 4:35, 8:26-36, 9:42. They are the familiar spirits of the Old Testament, and the Seducing spirits of the New Testament. 1 Timothy 4:1. They are under the rulership of Satan, and he utilizes them to steal, kill, and destroy human beings.
5.) The Arch-Angels. Michael (Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1; Jude 9; Revelation 12:7-9). Gabriel (Daniel 8:16; 9:21-27; Luke 1:19-27). Arch-angels are mighty emissaries of the Lord God, fight battles in the heavenlies, do God's bidding, carry out God's orders.
6.) Satan/Lucifer. Satan is a fallen cherubim who is wholly evil in character. Created good, holy and pure by God...Lucifer allowed pride to enter and attempted to overthrow God in a rebellion that swept 1/3 of the angels with him into defeat. Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-17; Luke 10:18; Revelation 12:4-9.
